ROCK SPRINGS - The fatal shooting of three horses at federal corrals in Rock Springs is under investigation.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management said agency personnel arriving for work June 12 at the corrals, which are used to hold wild horses, found the three animals had been shot the previous night.

Two of the horses were owned privately. The third was a wild mustang that was part of a BLM roundup and was being offered for adoption.

The BLM and the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Department are investigating. Sheriff's spokesman Dick Blust Jr. said authorities have a number of leads.

In 2001, more than 30 wild horses were shot and killed on federal rangelands northeast of Rock Springs. That case has not been solved.
