GILLETTE, Wyo. — Campbell County is spending $870,000 to realign a road at the Gillette-Campbell County Airport, but general passenger traffic should not be affected.
Cheyenne-based Simon Contractors will begin the road work Monday.
Airport director Jay Lundell said the road is being realigned to improve operations at the general aviation facility — but construction should not affect traffic to the main terminal. The road serves corporate, personal, freight and air ambulance services at the airport.
"General aviation encompasses a lot of business here at the airport," he said.
Lundell said the road is being realigned because people can't turn left from employee and customer parking areas at the general aviation facility. Re-aligning the road will allow the airport to move the main entrance for general aviation from the south side to the east side of the building.
Lights will be added to the road, in addition to some asphalt work. Rental car companies also will have space for a new parking lot with a car wash, Lundell said.
"It's very deteriorated and we need to do something with the existing area where they park," Lundell said of the rental lot.
Construction is expected to take 45 days, and Simon Contractors plans to work six days a week to finish the project.
