GILLETTE, Wyo. — A group in Gillette has won a bid to host the National Girls' Fast Pitch Softball Tournament in 2014.
The Gillette Girls Fastpitch Association said earlier this month it had won the bid. It estimates the event could generate up to about $675,000 in revenue from lodging and meals for attendees.
The announcement comes as the city considers whether to award a contract to build eight new softball fields. Mayor Tom Murphy says the city has enough money in reserves for the $11 million project, but some City Council members think the city may need to focus on paying for other projects first. Councilman Everett Boss says that regardless of the city's decision, the national tournament could be held at other fields in town.
