Hebgen Lake Earthquake anniversary events

Four days of events are planned to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1959 Hebgen Lake Earthquake.
The Aug. 17, 1959, earthquake sent a massive landslide across the Madison River, burying a campground, and caused devastation along the canyon and Hebgen Lake, killing 28 people and injuring others.
The U. S. Forest Service plans several events open to the public. All are at the Earthquake Lake Visitor Center unless otherwise indicated.
Aug. 14
• All afternoon. Guided walks to the memorial boulder.
• 1 p.m. Mike Stickney, speaks on historic earthquakes in Montana.
• 2 p.m. Quake survivor Jerry Yetter speaks.
• 3 p.m. Children’s program.
• 4 p.m. Dave Lageson speaks on geological settling of Hebgen Lake area.
• 7 p.m. Jack Epstein, geologist who was at Hebgen in 1959, speaks.
Aug. 15
• 10 a.m. Guided walk to Refuge Point with survivor John Owen.
• 11 a.m. Cabin Creek scarp program with geologists.
• 2 p.m. Guided walk to Red Canyon fault scarp.
• 3 p.m. Book signing with Doug Huigen, author of “Cataclysm: When Human Stories Meet Earth’s Faults.”
• 4 p.m. Children’s program.
• 7 p.m. David Bitner, 1959 lookout in Yellowstone National Park, speaks.
Aug. 16
• 9 a.m. Smoke jumpers, including some who jumped as part of the 1959 rescue operations, meet with visitors at Refuge Point.
• 11 a.m. Tour of the West Yellowstone Interagency Smoke Jumper Base at the West Yellowstone Airport.
• 1-4 p.m. Open house for quake survivors, rescue workers and families, West Yellowstone Holiday Inn.
• 2-3:30 p.m. Survivors speak, Holiday Inn.
• 3:30 p.m. Program on the rescue of injured, Holiday Inn.
• 4 p.m. Fault scarp research program, Holiday Inn.
Aug. 17
• 10 a.m. Commemoration of the 1959 earthquake.
• 11 a.m. Martin Stryker, quake survivor, speaks.
• Noon. Memorial service at the memorial boulder.
