GILLETTE, Wyo. —Gov. Matt Mead's proposed budget recommends spending $3 million to implement a plan to clean up old oil and gas wells across the state.

Wyoming is home to some 1,200 so-called orphan wells that no longer are producing oil or gas and have been abandoned by their owners. Many of the wells are environmental hazards.

Mead released his proposed budget for the upcoming biennium last week. State lawmakers will work on the budget during the four-week legislative session that begins Feb. 10.

State lawmakers have asked the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission to develop a plan to plug the old wells. Lawmakers plan to meet with commission staff to discuss the plan later this month.
