CASPER, Wyo. — At least three popular state parks were already at camping capacity for the weekend’s Fourth of July festivities as of Thursday afternoon, and another will likely fill, according to the state parks department.

Keyhole, Curt Gowdy and Guernsey state parks were full, and Glendo State Park would likely be full by Friday, said Bill Westerfield, chief of operations for Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails.

Boysen, Seminoe and Buffalo Bill state parks will probably have space throughout the weekend.

“There’s a chance you could roll into the park and someone could have decided to go home and you will get a spot,” Westerfield said. “But I wouldn’t bank on it.”

Westerfield does not expect to hit record numbers of visitors because most state parks allow camping only in designated areas.

“Eight to 10 years ago, we did not have camping in designated sites only, and it was a madhouse,” he said “We had 5,000 people on the mile-long stretch on Sandy Beach at Glendo. It was madness.”

Because of budget cuts in state parks, some of the park facilities will not be cleaned as often as they were in previous years and the grass will not be mowed as often, Westerfield said.

Visitors will also be treated to warm weather throughout the weekend. It’s expected to be sunny all day Saturday and Sunday, with a chance of thunderstorms Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

All state parks will still be open to day-use activities including hiking, boating, biking and fishing.
