RIVERTON, Wyo. — Crews are spraying along local streets and alleyways in Riverton to knock down mosquito populations and protect residents from possibly contracting West Nile virus.

Fremont County Weed and Pest Assistant Supervisor Nancy Pieropan says the spraying program uses the insecticide malathion.

The city will honor no-spray requests from residents who believe malathion is harmful. But Pieropan says the spraying will continue if West Nile virus is detected locally because the disease becomes a public health issue.

West Nile virus killed one person in Park County last year.
