Russ Cundall, 62, a welder for Chesapeake Energy

Russ Cundall, 62, a welder for Chesapeake Energy, finishes up his cigarette at the front counter of the Plains Trading Post March 5 in Douglas. The area has been undergoing an oil boom for the past year, bringing a flood of workers to the area. Charlie Hegglund, the co-owner of the Plains Trading Post restaurant and Motel with his brother Ed, says the oil booms help them stay in business in the long term. Hegglund says they try to cater to the oil workers by offering deals on the motel rooms, indoor smoking at the Trading Post and certain meals he knows to be popular with the workers. Some locals say within the past five to six months it’s been difficult because housing and gas prices have been raised significantly in response to the boom.
