JACKSON, Wyo. — The Jackson Town Council has authorized up to $700,000 to build a massive buttress that could temporarily slow the landslide at East Gros Ventre Butte and to monitor the situation.

The weight will be built in a business parking lot to act as a counterbalance to the slipping hillside.

About 60 people affected by the slow-moving slide began evacuating Wednesday. Residents of four homes and two apartment buildings will remain under an evacuation order while town officials look at how to stabilize the hillside.

Officials first noticed a large crack in the hillside April 4. They say the ground continues to move about an inch per day, and they believe there is no danger of a catastrophe.
