I am stunned. Yet another unbelievable and horrific violent attack on innocent high school students in Florida. Truth be told, the suspect is most likely an innocent as well. The clarion call is loud and clear. There is something very, very wrong in our country. There are, perhaps, many things to blame for this trending act that seems to have befallen our nation. Is it too much media? Broken families? Abuse and neglect? Video games that glorify violence? Mental health? Hatred and bigotry? The list goes on and there are plenty of avenues of blame to consider.

Are we a nation that has so desensitized violence, abuse, poverty, homelessness, bullying, rudeness and assault that basic humanity is no longer an American value? Fear begets fear. Fear must not be our reality or our response. We, the adults in the room, have the collective responsibility to stand up and say, “Stop! Enough!”

Our children need to be protected by us, the adults in the room. What can you do? What will you do? Time to unplug and start a real, face-to-face conversation. As a nation, as a state, as a community and at home. Hearts are broken this Valentine’s Day.
