For the past 20 years, my husband and I have owned a cabin on the north shore of Cooney Dam State Park. For 30 years prior to buying it, we camped and fished the lake from spring through fall. For the last three years, this hasn’t been possible because the boat docks have been removed shortly after Labor Day.
When I spoke to the manager about early removal of the docks, she claimed that a few years ago, the lake froze in September, so she has them removed to avoid damage to them, as they cost $30,000 each. (I think if this is true, the state is being ripped off.) Does anyone remember any lake in Montana freezing over in September?
There are many other things I have concerns about regarding the maintenance and running of this park, and am sure that people who regularly use this park would agree.
Park management is overseen by the Bozeman district, not Billings, anymore.
