I am very concerned about the proposed budget cuts to health and human services. I have spent the past 10 years working as a caregiver. I care for eight clients and work six days a week helping them with everything from cleaning their homes to bathing and basic hygiene.

If the 10 percent cuts to Senior and Long-term Care are allowed to happen, who will care for my clients?

Caring for people in their own homes is better for them and their families. And it just makes sense financially. If these cuts happen, many of our clients will be forced into institutions or worse. I don’t think that is what any of us want but that is the dangerous game some legislators are playing when they refuse any options to raise revenue.

I don’t like paying any more in taxes than I already have to. But it’s worth it if it means that our elders can live their final days with grace and dignity. The people we serve are some of the most vulnerable populations in our community. For their sake our legislators need to take their task seriously and figure out solutions that protect essential services without balancing the budget entirely on the backs of the working poor.
