One Big Sky or is it Pie In The Sky that is being considered for development in downtown Billings? The developer is proposing a price tag of about $1.6 billion dollars to build the mega-development in the middle of downtown and up into the medical corridor.
Oh and they need $25 million of dollars of tax increment dollars to make it fly. But wait, the tax increment funds are almost flat broke. The Gazette states in the Dec. 3, 2017, issue that it will be three or four more years before any uncommitted TIF funds will be available.
In the Aug. 1, 2010, The Billings Gazette had this article: "1 billion — seconds ago, the year was 1959. A billion hours ago, our ancestors were living in the Stone Age. A billion days ago, no one walked on the Earth using two feet. Our U.S. government is spending $1 billion every 8 hours and 20 minutes."
Remember this was written in August 2010, but a billion is still a billion.
Now Billings is considering a $1.6 billion project when we have a population of only 120,000 in the greater Billings area. Who is going to pay for this Pie In The Sky Project?
Oh ya, the developers are asking for a $600,000 commitment from the city for planning and studies, whether a shovel of dirt is turned over or not.
