About the “Unfinished business for Red Lodge girls” basketball story (The Billings Gazette, Feb. 27, 2018):
First — Good luck, Team!
Second, in the story, there is a mention that it was thought this was the first District win for the school. No it wasn't.
1973 was a big year for girls basketball. We were playing boys’ rules and had regular tournaments, district, divisional and the very first state tournament for girls.
Red Lodge won the district, took second in divisional and placed seventh at state. When you considered that Red Lodge was the smallest town, smallest school and smallest team there, we were pretty proud of ourselves. Especially when we were in playing teams from all divisions. All the schools were there, there was only one state tournament for the whole state.
I know that was 45 years ago, but what we did as high school athletes, paved the way for the ones today.
I think it'd be great if you researched that year and did an article about that first girls state tournament.
Once again — GO RLHS Rams!
