In the Jan. 29 Gazette, Cliven Bundy said he has grazed his 400 cows on Clark County, Nevada, lands for 25 years. As he has not paid grazing fees for 25 years, he owes that county a lot of money.
According to Nick Serbasse's opinion piece, public land fees are $1.83 per animal unit, per month (called AUM). An animal unit can be one cow and one calf, or one cow. So, maybe figure 200 AUM times six months equals 1,200 AUM per year of six months grazing. That is probably going easy on Bundy. 1,200 AUM times 25 years equals $30,000, at $1.83 equals $54,900. But state fees usually run about $10, so Bundy may owe Clark County, Nevada, $300,000. So he may reconsider as it is cheaper to steal from all of us than from the county.
