Every spring, motorists are reminded, "watch for motorcycles," through various ad campaigns. As a motorcyclist myself, I have to say that I think it's time that motorcyclists take more initiative to increase their safety. What is the most common color you see bikers wearing? Flat black. The color that reflects the least light, and is therefore the least visible. I switched to a high visibility, lime green helmet and jacket a few years ago, and it made a tremendous difference in being noticed by other motorists. I know I may not look “cool,” and I get eyes rolled and disgusted looks from other bikers sometimes, but I think it’s a lot cooler to live to ride another day.
I spent almost two decades working in public safety seeing the result of too many motorcycle crashes. We have a saying in public safety when it comes to wearing traffic vests while working around roadways: Be seen, be safe. I think it’s time to start pushing that to motorcyclists. I know we’re at the end of the major riding season right now, but maybe this is good time to talk about it. I know motorcycle gear is expensive, and with the holidays coming up, maybe it would be a good addition to a wish list. After all, what loved one wouldn’t want to help ensure that you make it safely through another riding season to see another holiday?
