Food Stamp Cuts
In a move that prevents 2,000 Montanans from being denied food stamps, Gov. Steve Bullock authorized changes to the home heating assistance program for the poor on Wednesday.
With food stamp cuts starting Friday, local food pantries expected demand for their services to increase as poor families begin running out of the money for food earlier than usual.
A U.S. House vote Thursday to cut an estimated 3 million poor people from federal food stamp rolls was a necessary step toward passing a five-year farm bill, U.S. Rep. Steve Daines said.
Chances are slim that a farm bill will get passed by year’s end, but waiting until 2013 could be a disaster for America’s agriculture economy, a key Farm Bureau lobbyist said Tuesday.
