Since 1949, just 23 Montana schools have been crowned Class C 8-Man football champions. So it would be easy to assume Saturday's title game would feature a perennial power -- or two.
"He runs." Those were the words used by Ennis head coach Jay Fredrickson when asked what makes Twin Bridges quarterback Tyler Lott so dangerous.
And then there were four.
All five football classifications are now into their playoff brackets, as the AA concluded its regular season last Saturday. The rest of the classes played their first round playoff games, and the fields are now narrowed to eight teams – four games – in each class.
State football playoffs begin this week. All 16 of the Class B and Class C 8-Man games kick off on Saturday afternoon, while a couple of the Class A and Class C 6-Man games get started on Friday.
The Class C 8-man playoffs may not start until October 29th, but the postseason got underway in a big way on Friday and Saturday as the Southern C and Northern C conferences began their two-week process of seeding games.
This week featured upsets (Butte over Billings Senior and Big Timber over Townsend), games closer than expected (Helena beating Billings Skyview by seven points), and games that unexpectedly turned into lopsided wins (Manhattan shutting out Ronan and Fromberg-Roberts topping Bridger, 62-30).
