The Billings Outlaws and Sioux Falls Storm were in unfamiliar territory Saturday night.
It's territory the Storm hope to never visit again.
In the latest edition of a rivalry built on down-to-the-wire battles and dramatic comebacks, Billings dominated a clearly overmatched Sioux Falls team 70-35 in front of 5,809 joyous fans at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark.
"It feels good to go out on the field and execute exactly what we planned to do," said Outlaws quarterback Chris Dixon, who was a near-perfect 24-of-28 passing for 185 yards and 7 touchdowns. "We came into this game feeling like we needed to handle our business.
"We've had great game plans every time we've played Sioux Falls but haven't always executed them. Tonight we did."
Billings is 10-1 on the season and moves a step closer to locking up home-field advantage throughout the Indoor Football League playoffs.
For Sioux Falls, the four-time defending league champions, the loss is just their second on the field this season - but their record stands at 4-7 because their first five wins of the season were nullified due to violation of the IFL's workers' compensation insurance rules.
Both of Sioux Falls' losses on the field have come at the hands of the Outlaws, who rallied for a dramatic 42-41 win in their first meeting of the season. Outlaws coach Heron O'Neal said the aftermath of that first meeting played a key role in Saturday's blowout.
"A lot of people were saying we were lucky to win that first game and that Sioux Falls was still the best team in this league," O'Neal said.
"There's no question that our guys took offense to that … that definitely helped with our motivation for this game.
"We came out and played well in every facet of the game. Our coaching staff put together a great game plan and the players carried it out almost to perfection."
After the two teams traded scores in the first quarter, Billings scored four straight touchdowns for a 35-7 lead early in the third quarter. The outcome was never in doubt after that, much to the delight of the season-high crowd.
James Walton caught three of Dixon's TD passes, Robert Redd caught two and Tim Brown and new signee Eric McCain each caught one. Dixon and Charles Anthony each ran for a touchdown.
The Outlaws' defense also got in the scoring column, with Mike Bazemore recovering a fumble in the end zone after fellow defensive end Michael Landry sacked Sioux Falls quarterback Terrance Bryant at the goal line.
Kicker Nate Parseghian was a perfect 10-for-10 on extra-point kicks and has now made all 28 of his extra points in three games with Billings.
Outlaws linebacker Kelly Rouse and Sioux Falls receiver Terry James were ejected midway through the second quarter after a sideline scuffle that involved every player on the field.
O'Neal credited backup linebacker Chris Ndubueze for his play the rest of the way - Ndubueze shared the Outlaws' lead in tackles (6) with Michael Eby, who also had two interceptions.
"Ndubueze stepped in and did a great job," said O'Neal. "He's been working hard in practice and waiting for his opportunity, and tonight he got it. That's what team football is all about."
The two rivals will meet again this coming Saturday night in Sioux Falls, where the Storm will be playing for their playoff lives.
"They'll come after us with a great effort next week, no doubt," said Dixon, who increased his league-leading total of TD passes to 57. "Their home record is amazing (the Storm have not lost at Sioux Falls Arena since 2005).
"That's another hurdle for us. To prove that we are the best team in the league, we need to beat Sioux Falls at their house."
