The Billings Royals split a non-conference doubleheader with Class A Laurel on Monday at Dehler Park, losing the opener 7-3 and winning the second game 10-2.
Laurel batted around the order and scored four runs in the fifth inning of Game 1. Kade Osborne led off with a double, and Trevor Meier, Karson Kukes and Mitch Kaufman followed with RBI singles. Kukes finished 3 for 4.
Tanner Leenknecht hit a solo home run for the Royals in the fifth, but Dodgers pitcher Brenden Cellmer limited Billings to five hits and just two earned runs through 5 2/3 innings. It was Laurel’s first win over the Royals since 2001.
In the second contest, the Royals turned the tables by scoring four times in their half of the fifth, highlighted by Bryan Mitchell’s RBI double. Kevin Angland had a big game, going 3 for 4 with an RBI.
Pete Lind threw five innings for the Royals, allowing six hits and one earned run to get the victory.
