Kevin Franklin doubled home Shedric Long with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday afternoon, and the Billings Mustangs ended a two-game skid with a 4-3 Pioneer League victory over the Helena Brewers in front of 2,523 at Dehler Park.
The Mustangs (6-7) had lost their previous two games to the Brewers (6-7) by scores of 13-2 and 8-1. The two teams will conclude their four-game series on Monday with a 7:05 p.m. start.
Billings’ Garrett Boulware led off the ninth by drawing a walk from Helena pitcher Brandon Moore. Pinch-runner Long came in for Boulware.
Long was sacrificed to second by Argenis Aldazoro before Franklin delivered his game-winning double to center field.
The Mustangs outhit Helena, 8-5, and the Brewers committed four errors.
Jefry Sierra was the winning pitcher in relief for Billings after blowing a save opportunity in the ninth. Luke Moran and Jose Williams pitched the first eight innings, combining to allow just three hits, one earned run and striking out six.
Brian O’Grady and Franklin had two hits apiece for the Mustangs. Alex Greer drove in two runs with an RBI-double in the seventh and a ground out in the second.
Helena’s big blow was a solo home run by Tucker Neuhaus in the sixth inning. The Brewers tied the game at 3-all in the top of the ninth in pushing home two runs on a wild pitch and a fielding error in the outfield.
