Distractions won't bring Griz down

Montana coach Bobby Hauck

The ongoing flap between Griz coach Bobby Hauck and UM's student newspaper, The Kaimin, won't seem to die down.

The "story" made waves nationally this week, and Hauck took more heat today on Sports Illustrated's Web site.

I know Hauck looks like the bad guy here, and in some ways he is. For whatever reason the guy just doesn't know how to handle the media, but he really should cool the stonewalling act this time.

However, I also know the reporters from The Kaimin that are caught up in this thing have not been totally honest, either. As a reporter, when you become the story, something is wrong. And what's with this advisor they have? I've heard he's been threatening the athletic department. So these national headlines haven't been completely fair.

Regardless, the distractions aren't going to bother the Griz as they ready for their game tomorrow against Sacramento State.

Here's the scoop: Sac State hasn't beaten Montana ever. Never ever. The Hornets are 0-14 in this series. Not only that, Sac State is 0-13 all-time against ranked opponents.

On the flipside, things are going pretty well for the Griz heading in. Marc Mariani averages 21.7 yards per catch, tops in the Big Sky, and 24.1 yards per punt return, tops in the FCS. Chase Reynolds has scored five touchdowns in the last two games. Meanwhile, UM ranks fifth in the nation in scoring offense at 36.8 points per game and is seeking its seventh straight road victory.

They'll get it. Mark it down.
