GREAT FALLS — The University of Providence won five of nine matches wrestled in a 25-15 win over instate rival Montana State-Northern in Cascade Collegiate Conference wrestling on Wednesday here.
At heavyweight, UP's Matthew Hopkins won by forfeit.
MSUN defending national champion Brandon Weber earned a hard-fought 2-1 overtime victory against UP's Casey Dobson at 157 pounds. Weber, of Forsyth, is ranked No. 1 and Dobson, of Great Falls, is No. 7.
At 197 pounds, the CCC wrestler of the week — John Hensley of Providence — was dealt a 9-5 setback by Northern's Isaac Bartel. Hensley is ranked fourth in the NAIA.
"You can never call any of these matches. You can look at it on paper and you might as well rip it up and throw it out," UP coach Caleb Schaeffer said of wrestling MSUN in a press release from the school. "I always get shocked with one that we win and one that we lose and I'm sure (MSUN) coach Tyson (Thivierge) would say the exact same thing."
UP is now 3-0 in duals, while MSUN is 0-1.
The Argos' top wrestlers travel to Iowa for the Grand View Open on Saturday, while the rest of the team is at the Northwest Open in Powell, Wyoming, on Sunday. The Lights will compete at the Northwest Open.
