GREAT FALLS — The University of Providence announced Thursday it was adding men's and women's hockey to its athletic teams.
The two hockey programs will begin play during the 2018-19 season. The teams will play and practice at the Great Falls IcePlex.
The men's hockey team will be part of the American Collegiate Hockey Association, but which division is still yet to be decided. Montana Tech and Montana State are ACHA Division II and play in the Mountain West College Hockey League. The ACHA is a mix of varsity and club programs. UP will be the first varsity program in the state.
For the women's team, the association is still undecided. The ACHA includes two divisions of women's hockey but few of the teams at either level are in the Big Sky region.
The NAIA does not sanction hockey.
