ST.GEORGE, Utah — Senior pitcher Megan Dettling struck out a school-record and conference-record 18 batters in Montana State Billings 1-0 softball win over Chadron State on Thursday.
The win earned the Yellowjackets (5-3) a split in the first day of the Dixie State Invitational. They lost to Colorado State-Pueblo 5-4 in the opener.
Dettling, a senior from Sparks, Nev., struck out the side in four of seven innings and struck out two in the seventh to set the Great Northwest Athletic Conference mark.
The previous GNAC record was 17 by Lizzy Prescott of Western Oregon in 2006. The previous MSUB record was 15 by Joey Ehnes. Dettling limited Chadron State to a pair of singles.
The Yellowjackets scored their lone run on an RBI single by Brittanee Fisher in the fourth inning that brought home Heather Tracy.
Amanda Barham was 4 for 4 in the opener for MSUB, while Dettling doubled and had two RBI.
