Sophomore John-David Henderson of Arab, Ala., won a National Junior College Athletic Association national wrestling championship at 149 pounds over the weekend.
Henderson, who wrestles for Northwest College, led the Trappers to a ninth-place finish in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Also placing for the Trappers were Eduardo Penha (3rd at 133) and Matt Schmidt (6th at 141). Schmidt is a redshirt sophomore from Billings Senior. He was the 98-pound State AA champion in 2012. He was State AA runner-up at 119 in 2013. Penha is from Las Vegas.
Former Trappers wrestler Brian Luna, of Milliken, N.C., received the NWCA Hall of Fame Award. Luna was a 1999 NJCAA national champion for the Trappers. According to an article at www.teamusa.org, Luna then wrestled at Southern Colorado and became an NCAA Division II national runner-up. The next season, Southern Colorado dropped its wrestling program. Luna returned to the sport at age 27 in 2005 and became a NAIA national champion for Montana State Northern.
Western Wyoming placed 11th in the team standings. Cole Verner of Green River, Wyo., was honored with the Joseph A. Rockenback Sportsmanship Award. He finished second at 125.
The Mustangs' Jaydon Rogers (141) of West Haven, Utah, finished third and Kaden Campbell (174) of Roosevelt, Utah, fifth.
