Malta golfer Gordon Webb will be back to defend his title when the Montana State Men's Amateur Championships get under way later this month at Butte Country Club.
The 92nd annual tournament will be played July 22-25. The entry deadline is July 14, according Jim Opitz, executive director of the sponsoring Montana State Golf Association.
Opitz said he had 86 golfers signed up as of Wednesday. "If we get 120-130 that would be great," he said.
Entry forms for the 72-hole event are still available on the MSGA Web site at msgagolf.com or at golf courses statewide.
Webb won by five strokes last year at Riverside Country Club in Bozeman. The 20-year-old recently completed his freshman season at Western New Mexico University.
The Briarwood in Billings will be the site of the 23rd annual Montana State Men's Mid-Amateur on Aug. 13-15. The entry deadline is Aug. 1 or when the tournament is filled, Optiz said.
The 54-hole Mid-Am is for golfers age 30 and over. Optiz said he already has "over 100" entrants and is aiming for 170.
Defending champion Travis Williams of Missoula has signed up to defend his crown. He won by three strokes last summer at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.
Entry forms are also available on the MSGA Web site at msgagolf.com or at golf courses statewide.
Both the State Am and Mid-Am can handle 208 players.
The Montana State Seniors Tournament, which is set for Aug. 4-6 at the Meadowlark Country Club and Eagle Falls courses in Great Falls, has reached capacity at 336 golfers, executive director John Frankino said.
He added that he has around 17 players on a waiting list.
The senior competition is for golfers age 55 and over.
Frankino said he will begin processing the entries on July 15.
"Given the nature and age of our group" Frankino said he expects some additions and deletions to the entry list prior to the start of tournament play.
Frankino said Bozeman's Ron Garland, who is the reigning champion, will be back to defend his title. Garland prevailed by two strokes last year in Butte.
