CORVALLIS, Ore -- It weighed on him for months, and Tres Tinkle has decided to remain at Missoula Hellgate for his senior year of high school.

Tinkle’s father, Oregon State basketball coach Wayne Tinkle, told The Oregonian on Monday that his son has decided to play his senior season at Hellgate rather than join his family in Corvallis.

Wayne Tinkle was hired away from the University of Montana by OSU in May after eight seasons and three NCAA tournament appearances.

"He loved it here, made some good friends," Wayne Tinkle said, "but I think the buddies that he has in Missoula, kids he's known since kindergarten, were too much to leave. I think he wants to graduate with them and with his team. We're obviously fully supportive of that."

Wayne Tinkle said Tres "will be well looked after" in Missoula, though the family has not made specific housing arrangements. The Tinkles have close friends and relatives who could host him for the year.

"I had to talk with my dad a little more," Tres Tinkle told the Missoulian on Monday. "My mom and I were both on board that I wanted to be at Hellgate. Dad wasn't quite ready to accept the fact, because he loves his kids so much he didn't want me to be away from home."

"It has been pretty stressful," he said. "Everywhere I go people wanted to know where I'm going, people always giving me their opinions on what I should do."

Tinkle led Hellgate to the 2013 Class AA state championship and was named the tournament's MVP. Last season Tinkle and the Knights lost in the title game to Helena Capital.

The 6-foot-7 Tinkle, a consensus four-star recruit, averaged 21.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.8 steals per game last season. Tinkle has made waves on the AAU circuit the past two summers, and has been ranked as the No. 45 recruit in the nation among the class of 2015 by ESPN.com.

Had he moved to Corvallis for his senior season, Tinkle would have chosen between Corvallis High School and Crescent Valley High School.

Tinkle is reportedly making an official recruiting visit to Oregon State this weekend. This list of schools that have offered Tinkle a scholarship include Boston College, Utah and USC.
