WORDEN — A familiar face is taking over the Huntley Project girls basketball program.

Jay Santy, who led the Red Devils to Class B state football championships in 2008 and 2009, was named as the school's new head girls basketball coach on Monday afternoon.

Santy comes into the job after former girls basketball coach Kurt Kautz died in a car wreck on Oct. 14.

Santy has been a fixture at Huntley Project since 1988. He was the head football coach for 10 years and has also served time as an assistant coach in girls basketball, track and field, as well as serving as the head boys basketball coach for seven years and an assistant for more. Last year, Santy was an assistant on Kautz's staff and retired from teaching in the spring, according to athletic director Guy Croy.

"We felt with the situation of losing Kurt  in the accident that this will be best for our girls program," Croy said in a press release. "Coach Santy has taught them, coached them last year as part of Kurt’s staff and brings a wealth of experience as a basketball coach. He will provide continuity and consistency for our girls basketball program."
