RED LODGE (7:55 p.m.) -- We're 10 minutes away from the Southern B's nightcap between Lodge Grass and Red Lodge.
Whitehall just finished up holding off a pesky Baker team, 56-45. The Trojans' leading scorer Layne Simon spent much of the game in foul trouble, but Casey McLean, Sean McCarthy, and Dawson Patritti picked up the scoring slack, each finished in double-digits.
The Trojans, fresh off their district championship win over Manhattan last weekend, advance the semifinals where they will play the winner of the day's final game between the Indians and Rams.
RED LODGE (4:35 p.m.) -- We're between sessions here after Manhattan and Shepherd earned early wins at the Southern B boys basketball divisional tournament.
Shepherd controlled Three Forks for the duration of the game, and I don't think they ever trailed. It was tied at 3 early in the first quarter, but the Mustangs dominated the rest of the way. Austin Bies had his way against the Wolves' defense, attacking the rim with relative ease.
In Friday's semifinal game, Shepherd will take on Manhattan, which easily beat Forsyth in the tournament's first game. The Tigers beat Shepherd in the Mustangs' first game of the season, 63-43.
On tap for tonight, we have Whitehall-Baker and Red Lodge-Lodge Grass. Tournament officials are expecting a good crowd for the nightcap, so it should make for a fun environment.
RED LODGE (2:05 p.m.) -- The second half belonged to Manhattan, as the Tigers tightened up their defense and really set the tempo. The final score ended up being 86-65.
Quinn McQueary and Tanner Hupka had big games for the Tigers, each scoring more than 20 points. Overall, it was an impressive bounce-back win for the Tigers, who were coming off of their first loss of the season.
Manhattan awaits the winner of the Shepherd-Three Forks game, which is tipping off momentarily.
RED LODGE (1:05 p.m.) -- I made the trip out to Red Lodge to watch the first round of the boys Southern B divisional tournament today, while Mike Scherting and Greg Rachac will be covering the combined Eastern A divisional tournament in Billings.
Manhattan, District 5B's 2-seed, and Forsyth, the 1-seed out of the 3B, tipped of the tournament with a 12:30 start. At halftime, the Tigers lead an uptempo game 38-32.
It's the first time I've seen either of these teams since the divisional tournament last year, but this game has been everything I was expecting so far. Manhattan's Quinn McQueary and Forsyth's Luke Schwagler have shown off their ball handling and passing, as both floor generals had solid first halves.
The second half is set to tip. Keep checking here for updates throughout the day.
