When they beat Conrad in the Northern B divisional semifinals Friday night, the Fairfield girls extended their winning streak to 100 games.
The Eagles broke the Montana record for consecutive wins at the divisional tournament last season and are working on their fourth consecutive undefeated season. They’ve finished 26-0 each of the last three years, capping each season with the Class B championship.
Fairfield is 22-0 after Friday’s win, which set up a game with Malta in the divisional championship.
The 100-game winning streak ranks right up there with impressive sports feats. Fairfield will have its name in the Montana record books for a long time – maybe forever – with this winning streak.
But as impressive as the streak is to basketball fans across the state (you can include me in that group), coach Dustin Gordon and his team aren’t too worried about it.
“100 is pretty cool, but we are really trying to stay focused on Malta (Saturday) night,” Gordon said in a text. “They are a very talented and well coached team. Hopefully we can take a minute to appreciate 100 after we accomplish a few more important and immediate goals. The first of which is to give ourselves a spot at the State Tournament.”
“Also … ,” Gordon continued. “There are a handful of really good players over the past few years who are an important part of this moment and part of this accomplishment. This is truly a demonstration of a team and tradition.”
