There's plenty of incentive for the Billings Skyview Falcons when they travel to Bozeman for their final regular season game tonight. If the Falcons win, the odds are good they'll get a home game. A loss would likely send them on the road.
While Skyview battles for playoff seeding, the 52nd meeting between Billings West and Billings Senior will boil down to pride. The Bears and Broncs meet at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Wendy's Field at Daylis Stadium.
Skyview coach Ron Lebsock doesn't want to get involved with playoff scenarios. He just wants to Falcons to focus on the task at hand.
"Winning, without a doubt, is our biggest concern,'' said the veteran coach.
That could be a chore, too, because the Hawks have a prolific offense led by quarterback Tanner Roderick and running back T.J. Leep.
"The Hawks are a very good ball club,'' Lebsock said. "They run well and throw well. They have good athletes on both sides of the ball. Roderick and Leep are quite a tandem.''
Bozeman leads the AA in scoring at 37.3 points a game and is second in total offense at 418.2 yards. Roderick is tops in total offense (268.0) and Leep is the rushing leader (126.0).
The Falcons are fifth in scoring with a 28.3 mark and are eighth in total offense at 327.7. The Falcons have an edge on defense, giving up 308.1 yards to 350.8 for the Hawks. Bozeman has given up just 10 more points.
This is the first time the Broncs and Bears have met in the regular season finale in 24 years. The rivalry, which goes back to 1961, had season-ending games from 1963-72 and 1982-85. Next year's game is also slated to be the last game.
The Golden Bears were officially eliminated from the playoffs with a 42-0 loss to Great Falls CMR, ending a streak of 13 straight postseason appearances.
West coach Paul Klaboe said the game still holds some significance.
"Senior game is always big,'' Klaboe said. "The game, as far as a senior, that's the game they're going to talk about more than anything else, I'm sure. Plus, it's the last game of the year for our seniors. It's a chance for them to finish on a good note.''
Klaboe hopes the Bears can put together a good offensive performance.
"Offensively, we've kind of struggled the last three weeks. We scored eight, then we scored 10 and then we scored zero. Last week was a real struggle against CMR's defense, a lot of that them and a lot of that us. For us, that's going to be a big key. We've got to be able to move the football and establish some offense and be able to throw a little bit.''
West completed just 3 of 16 passes against the Rustlers.
However, Shaun Wolf has rushed for 1,041 yards and the Bears' defense has been pretty good most of the year. West has yielded 22.2 points and 306.6 yards, much of that in the last three weeks.
"Their defense is tough,'' said Senior coach Mark Sulser. "I think Wolf is one of the top running backs in the league. Wolf production-wise and (Clay) Compton speed-wise are a concern.''
The Broncs have had some trouble on defense, allowing 39.4 points and 390 yards a game. Individually, Ben Sulser is No. 8 in passing with a 131 yards a game. The sophomore has completed 94 of 196 attempts for seven touchdowns. He has been intercepted 11 times. His top target is Danny Desin, who has averaging 13.7 yards on 41 receptions and scored six TDs.
