POLSON -- Molly Day fired a two-hitter and Billings Central began play Thursday at the State A softball tournament with a 1-0 victory over Livingston.

Day, a junior right-hander, struck out seven and walked none. Pinch-runner Josie Snyder, a freshman, scored the game's only run on a passed ball in the second inning.

"They played well. We played well," Central coach Coleman Rockwell said. "It was a good scrappy game."

In the second, Addy Daubert got things started for the Rams with a double.

Snyder, who entered the game to run for Daubert, then moved to third on a bunt by Allison Walter and scored on the passed ball.

The Rams, 14-7, will now play defending state champion Frenchtown, 20-1, on Friday at 1 p.m. in a championship quarterfinal game.

The Broncs began state play with a 9-0 victory over Havre. Morgan Ray threw a no-hitter for Frenchtown.

"It will be a good test for us, for sure," Rockwell said. "I'm looking forward to it, and I think the girls are, too. We'll see where it takes us."

Against Livingston, the Rams managed just four hits.

"Our defense definitely stood out, and Molly pitched a good game," Rockwell said. "They put the ball in play a lot. We just made a lot of plays."

In other first-round games, Laurel fell 8-5 to Polson and Miles City was beaten by Havre 7-5 to fall into loser-out games on Friday.

Laurel will face Livingston at 9 a.m., followed by Miles City versus Belgrade at 11 a.m.

Laurel owned a 5-1 cushion over Polson before the Pirates tallied three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take control.

The Locomotives were limited to four hits. Polson had eight.

Miles City, which is making its first-ever appearance at state, was leading 5-4 over Havre until the Blue Ponies' Dani Wagner belted a 3-run home run in the sixth inning.

In addition to her winning blow, Wagner, a sophomore, also smacked a 3-run double in the third inning to wipe out an early 2-0 deficit.

Sierra Niedge of Miles City collected three hits and drove in two runs.

Havre swatted 14 hits to Miles City's seven.

State tournament play will continue through Saturday.
