Erika McLeod of Butte has been selected as the state's Gatorade girls track and field athlete of the year.

The 5-foot-6 senior hurdler, sprinter and jumper won four events at the recent State AA championships in Great Falls. McLeod triumphed in the 200 meters, 300 hurdles, triple jump and long jump for the Bulldogs.

The Gatorade award recognizes athletic excellence, along with academic achievement and character. McLeod is now a finalist for the national award, which will be announced in June.

"Erika McLeod represents the sport of track and field very well," Kalispell Glacier Jerry Boschee said. "Besides the impressive performances she turned in throughout the season, she is very personable young lady. I love her competitiveness, yet she stays humble while doing it."
