By her standards, the 2014 track and field season got off to a slow start for Brianna Gray.

The Park City senior battled an illness in the early part of the spring, slowing her times for the first few meets. Gray is the defending Class C champion in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, so losing doesn’t sit well with her.

“I’m not (used to losing) and I don’t like it,” Gray laughed between events at the Big Timber-Columbus Invite a couple weeks ago. “It definitely is a good pusher. Like, I’ve lost a couple times (this year) and it makes me want to go and even train harder.”

That training includes a weight-lifting regimen to help Gray get out of her blocks quicker, which has been an area of emphasis this season.

“My start is a really big thing,” explained Gray. “And just pumping my arms and keeping them in line. It’s one of the bigger things I’m working on.”

As the season progresses, so, too, do Gray’s times. She’s getting faster in both sprints, but still has time to trim to match last year’s state-winning marks. She won the 100 in 12.71 seconds and the 200 in 26.54.

According to the montanatrack.com deep lists, Gray currently ranks fourth in the 100 in Class C. Unofficially, she’s second in the class in the 200.

In addition to her sprints, Gray, who will run college track at Montana State Billings, runs legs on both relay teams this year. She ran the hurdles last season, but is on the fence about adding them to her event list this year.

“We have a young team. We have a lot of freshmen, and all my relays are with freshmen,” Gray said. “But we do really good, I’m really proud of them.”

Glasgow finds success at Sidney Invite

The Glasgow boys and girls had impressive showings at the Sidney Invitational last weekend.

The girls cruised to the team title on the strength of first-place finishes from Megan Dailey (100 and high jump), Josie Braaten (1,600 and 3,200) and Dana Hughes (shot put). Both Scottie relay teams won, too.

On the boys’ side, Ryan Grandchamp continued his strong season, winning the 100, placing second in the 200 and third in the long jump. Grandchamp’s season-best marks in those events rank him fourth in Class B in the 100 and first in both the 200 and long jump.

Chase Fossum also has Class B’s second-best marks in the 400 and triple jump on the season.

Sidney sprinter dashes to top of deep list

Sidney’s Caleb Benson also had a strong showing at the Sidney Invitational.

Benson, who is committed to play wide receiver at Rocky Mountain College next fall, won the 200, 400 and javelin. He placed third in the 100.

His time of 22.95 seconds in the 200 at the Sidney Invitational ranks first in Class A.

Best in the West

The Russ Pilcher/Western Montana Top 10 meet was Tuesday in Missoula. Fritz Neighbor of the Missoulian reports that athletes either broke or tied nine meet records. For the entire list of records to fall, visit missoulian.com, but here are some highlights:

• Erika McLeod continues to set herself apart in the long jump, after launching a leap of 18-6½. The Butte senior is the defending state champion.

• Helena Capital’s Kyle Nickol strengthened his position atop the 400-meter run deep list. Nickol ran a 48.89 at the Top 10 to break the meet record and set the state’s fastest time of the season.

• Colin Dolese of Missoula Hellgate eclipsed the meet record in the 300 hurdles, posting a time of 38.07 seconds. Dolese is the defending state champion in the event.

The Midland Roundtable Top 10 meet is scheduled for Tuesday at the Laurel High School Sports Complex.
