BILLINGS — Missoula disc golfer McCoy Connor took top honors in the men's open division at the Montana State Championships last weekend at Pioneer Park.
The 32-year-old won by four strokes over runner-up Seth White of Billings. It marked the first time Connor won the event, although he did finish second in 2006 after forcing a sudden-death playoff.
"Honestly I just attribute winning to what's between my ears, playing the mental game better," he said. "I was able to stay clean and avoid bogies.
"I believe I only had one bogey in the tournament. The physical package has been there for me but I was able to believe in myself and take it home."
Connor, the bar manager at Flipper's Casino & Tavern, also won the Montana points series competition for 2017. The Professional Disc Golf Association-sanctioned race takes into account eight events.
Missoula also had a champion in the men's master's division in Brian Bjortomt.
