MILES CITY -- Rain has washed out the weekend of horse racing scheduled for the Eastern Montana Fairgrounds as part of the Bucking Horse Sale.

Eight live races were planned for both Saturday and Sunday, but were canceled due to muddy track conditions, according to Don Richards, director of racing.

"The chance of injury to the horses and riders prompted the decision," Richards said.

The races, part of Miles City's four-day meet, will not be made up.

A Quarter Horse Derby and Futurity were part of the weekend lineup, along with a Paint Futurity.

Richards said the prize money for those races was distributed amongst the qualifiers.

While the horse racing was canceled, Richards said all of the activities associated with the Bucking Horse Sale, including Sunday's match bronc races, are still on.
