SHERIDAN, Wyo. -- Steve Smiley has stepped down as men’s basketball coach and athletic director at Sheridan College to join the coaching staff at Weber State.

Sheridan assistant Matt Hammer will take over as interim coach and athletic director, the school announced Monday.

Smiley guided the Generals to a 153-44 record in six seasons, tops in Region IX in that span. Smiley was named the Region IX North coach of the year twice, and 21 Sheridan players earned scholarships to Division I programs under his tutelage.

Hammer recently joined the Generals as an assistant coach, following two years as an assistant coach at Saginaw Valley State in Michigan. Hammer played professionally in Iceland for one season before taking coaching jobs at Northern State and Aberdeen Central High School in South Dakota.
