PUYALLUP, Wash. - Shaun Stroh and Jhett Johnson have perfect timing.
The two came up with their biggest wins of the year, taking the saddle bronc and team roping titles, respectively at the Justin Boots Playoffs this past weekend.
Bobby Welsh, of Gillette, Wyo., swept the bull riding being the only competitor to post qualified rides in the semifinals and final round to earn a rodeo-best $23,338. Welsh is currently fourth in the PRCA world standings.
Stroh went 86 points on Flying Five's Sundance to win the final round. Stroh, who also won the semifinal round, earned a total of $15,140 and moved to 15th in the world standings. Stroh qualified for the playoffs with just $16,251 in the Wrangler Tour standings.
"I've been awfully blessed these last couple of weeks,'' said Stroh, of Dickinson, N.D. "I just kept going and going.''
Only the top 15 in each event qualify for the National Finals Rodeo. The 2009 PRCA regular season ends Sept. 30.
Johnson, of Casper, won the final round of team roping with partner Steve Purcella, of Hereford, Texas. The two each won $14,277. Johnson has also moved to 15th in the world team roping heading standings.
Stroh, Welsh and Johnson will have another opportunity to pad their earnings at the Justin Boots Playoff Finals, Sept. 24-26 in Omaha, Neb.
