BUTTE — Shai McDonald of Gardiner bested a tightly-bunched field to win the second performance and take over the year-end standings lead in barrel racing at the Northern Rodeo Association/Northern Women's Rodeo Association Finals on Friday night.

The rodeo concludes Saturday at the Butte Civic Center and will determine the 2017 year-end champions. The performance begins at 7 p.m. 

McDonald, a high school student, won with a time of 14.95 seconds. She was one-hundredth of second better than second place Tammy Jo Carpenter of Kalispell. The top four finishers were separated by .04 seconds.

McDonald, who also leads the average, has lead of $147 on Carpenter. Carpenter also leads the all-around cowgirl standings.

One night after winning the first round of steer wrestling, Hank Hollenbeck returned to win the second round of tie-down roping. The Molt cowboy has pulled within $182 of Wolf Creek's Sam Levine in the all-around cowboy standings.

Other second round winners were: Tristan Hansen, bareback; Tyler Friend, saddle bronc; Loncey Johnson, bull riding; Sean Sayers, steer wrestling; Jade Stoddard-Ike Folsom, team roping; Tracey Bolich, breakaway roping.
