The Simply Mac Apple supply store on Billings West End shut down Wednesday, following a rough holiday season by its corporate parent.
Employees standing outside the store in front of Rimrock Mall at 316 S. 24th St. W. confirmed the closure Thursday morning.
Texas-based GameStop Corp., which owns Simply Mac, announced Jan. 13 that its holiday sales fell 16.4 percent company-wide. CEO Paul Raines said in a written statement that the company would evaluate closing non-productive stores this year and laying off workers.
GameStop “continues to focus on the execution of our business transformation plan, which includes growing our non-gaming businesses and right-sizing our global store portfolio across all our retail brands. This involves evaluating and closing non-productive locations. The closure of this Simply Mac store is part of that strategy,” GameStop spokeswoman Jackie Smith said Thursday in a written statement.
Customers with products at the store for servicing should call 1-877-5-Simply, Smith said.
The Simply Mac stores in Missoula and Bozeman are open.
Two GameStop-branded stores also operate in Billings inside Rimrock Mall and in Billings Heights. Both are remaining open.
The Billings Simply Mac opened in September 2014 and sold mostly Apple products, including iPhones, the Apple Watch, iPads and Apple computers.
