Maurices, a women’s clothing store, is leaving Rimrock Mall and moving into a new building at Shiloh Crossing, according to a developer and city building permits.
Construction is underway for a new 5,000-square-foot building next to Ulta Beauty that will be ready by Aug. 1, Shiloh Crossing developer Steve Corning said Thursday.
The lineup will create a nice row of stores for customers, he said.
“They obviously like the synergy of Ulta, Shoe Carnival, especially Ulta,” Corning said.
Daron Olson, a Rimrock Mall spokesman, said Maurices has been a good retailer, and the mall expects to announce leases with new tenants "shortly."
"Sometimes a tenant wants to change their size or location and a mall simply can’t accommodate that change. Sometimes the center needs that location because of a renovation or consolidation for a new tenant, and again, a relocation doesn’t work. It’s a very delicate formula. Maurices has been a great tenant, and we have other great tenants waiting for space," Olson said in a written statement.
Messages for officials at Maurices and the Ascena Group were not immediately returned Thursday afternoon.
Maurices is the only tenant listed on a city of Billings building permit. The building is valued at $409,500, according to the city, but Corning said the entire project will cost about $1.2 million.
The Duluth, Minnesota-based Ascena Group owns brands such as Maurices, Ann Taylor, Lane Bryant, Dressbarn and others. It’s the nation’s largest specialty retailer focusing on women’s apparel with 4,900 stores and 70,000 employees.
Like many brick-and-mortar retailers, Maurices has struggled to compete online. Same-store sales at Maurices fell 8 percent during the three-month holiday shopping season, one of the worst performances in Ascena’s portfolio, the company said in a March earnings report.
Shiloh Crossing has two four-acre pads remaining for development in front of Scheels Sporting Goods. A new Jiffy Lube is also under construction in front of Five Guys Burgers and Fries.
