Cheryl Majerus has been a business owner for more than 30 years, so when her newest venture, Beauty Outlet & Boutique, opened last May at 2940 Grand Ave., she thought she had prepared for almost any contingency.
For a couple of months after the store opened, things went according to plan.
“We did well right off the bat,” as new products arrived and walk-in customers stopped by for a peek at the new store.
“Until last week,” Majerus said, referring to a construction project to replace a water line along Grand Avenue.
During the third week of August, the eastbound lane on Grand Avenue was blocked as earth movers and dump trucks slowly worked their way down the street. Access to several businesses on the south side of Grand was blocked, and traffic was detoured to an alley south of the street.
Despite the inconvenience, Majerus remained unfazed.
“I’ve been in business since I was 20 years old,” she said.
“One week of my life isn’t going to make too big of a difference.”
Majerus started Ahead of our Time, a salon and day spa, in 1985, and later started Beaches Beauty Supply, a beauty supply wholesaler.
Both were first-of their-kind businesses for the Billings market.
“I’ve always wanted to be the first to do something,” Majerus said.
Both businesses succeeded, and after selling them, Majerus sold real estate for a number of years.
But she never got over her love for working in the beauty industry, so her next business venture was born.
Beauty Outlet & Boutique specializes in professional hair care and skin care products such as Redken, Paul Mitchell and Pureology.
Her business partner, Linda Johnson, travels the country as a trainer for Pureology products.
But Majerus has branched out by offering jewelry, leather purses and accessories.
She’s also planning to feature Montana-made products as her store aims to be a destination shop that appeals to women and their spouses who are searching for the right gift.
Yes, gift certificates are available.
The business offers boutique and salon services, including hair, nails, massage, pedicures and shellac services.
“I’ve always liked to diversify my businesses,” Majerus said.
Majerus decided to locate the business on Grand Avenue because it’s close to where she lives and because there’s no other business quite like it in the area.
“I wanted to appeal to the 59106 ZIP code,” she said.
