Virginia Mermel, PhD, CNS, of Billings, was honored with the Patricia Hennessey Leadership Award by the Montana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly the Montana Dietetic Association, a state affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, at the Food and Nutrition Summit in Bozeman on June 2. To qualify for recognition, members must have provided leadership in the association, community, or in their jobs, and promoted optimal health and nutritional status of Montanans. Mermel is described as a visionary leader who is committed to feeding hungry children, having been instrumental in establishing Backpack Meals and Teen Pantry Programs for students. She also helped increase School Breakfast Program participation and assisted in launching an annual food drive in Billings.
