Poll: Bring troops home to fight fires

Last week, The Billings Gazette online poll asked readers if they agree with Gov. Brian Schweitzer's request that the Pentagon allow some of the 1,500 Montana National Guard troops currently serving in Iraq to return to Montana to prepare for the impending wildfire season.

In our unscientific online poll, the vast majority of readers, 902 respondents (71 percent), said Montana's National Guard troops should be brought home to prepare for the wildfire season, while just 380 respondents (29 percent) said they should remain in Iraq.

This week, we are asking readers if they think funds for Amtrak should be slashed to reduce the expenses of the federal government. What do you think? Should Amtrak lose the majority of its federal funding?

This week's online poll is on the home page of the billingsgazette.com. Readers can record additional comments on the news message boards under the 'online extras' tab at the top of any billingsgazette.com news page. Log on today and share your thoughts.
