Human hearts mysteriously appear amid Toltec ruins in central Mexico as a serial killer is at work in “Effigy,” a thriller by former Cody, Wyo., resident Theresa Danley, of Chinook.
Meanwhile archaeologists Anthony Peet and Lori Dewson are searching for a Mesoamerican effigy of Quetzalcoatl, which has disappeared. Aided by a colleague, a journalist and a Yaqui woman in mourning, the archaeologists must decipher clues hidden in an Aztec sunstone, Toltec pyramids and astronomical calendar rounds in their hunt.
Danley said she wanted to go beyond creating “just another 2012 doomsday story” and emphasize “the science behind all the hubbub.”
The author, who is working on a sequel to “Effigy,” will meet the public and tell more about her works at 1 p.m. Saturday during a signing at Hastings, 1603 Grand Ave. Her website is theresadanley.com.
