The Mayhem Poets
Winners of the poetry slam will be invited to open matinee ABT school performances featuring musical group The Mayhem Poets on Jan. 12. Deadline to enter the slam is Dec. 16.

The Alberta Bair Theater Education Department is looking for high school and college students from Billings and the surrounding area schools who want to compete in an upcoming poetry slam.

In order to be eligible to participate in the slam, students must submit one to three original poems to the ABT Education Department. The deadline to submit the application and poetry is Wednesday, Dec. 16. Both individual and group poetry are encouraged. A committee of local teachers, artists and community members will determine the top 12 individual or group poets who will be eligible to compete in the slam. The selected poets will be notified Dec. 18.

The Billings Poetry Slam presented by the Alberta Bair Theater and Venture Theatre will take place on Sunday, Jan. 10. at 2 p.m. at Venture Theatre. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students, available at the door.

All participants in the Billings Poetry Slam will also be eligible for cash prizes. The top three winners of the slam will be invited to open for two matinee school performances of The Mayhem Poets at the Alberta Bair Theater on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

The Mayhem Poets use hip-hop rhythms and dynamic theatrical techniques to develop their performances. Taking on topics as varied as Dr. Seuss, fast food and love, these beat-boxing bards from New York City keep the rapid-fire rhythms flying in this clever concert of words. Tickets are available for both shows.
