Joe Sullivan

Billings pianist, singer and composer Joe Sullivan, pictured here with other members of Joe's Little Big Band in 2014, will perform a variety of music at three venues throughout the next week.

In the coming days, the local music scene could easily be called the Joe Sullivan show. Much like his biography says, Sullivan never stops playing. This week, music lovers have many chances to catch the Billings pianist and singer in action.

The versatile Sullivan will first play the Elks Lodge from 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturday.

Then, on Dec. 14, he’ll join one of his bands, Little Joe and the Cartwrights, for a night of old-style country music — the type born from blues and folk — sprinkled with a touch of jazz, from 7 p.m. to midnight at VFW Post 6774 in the Heights. The band will play there again from 2 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 16.

Between VFW performances, Sullivan will meet up with the Matt Austin Quartet for a full evening of jazz at Wild Ginger from 7:30 to 10:30 on Dec. 15.

Sullivan grew up in Billings and earned his music degree at Rocky Mountain College. He got his start on the road at age 21 with rockabilly musician and Sun recording artist Sleepy LaBeef.

Sullivan stayed true to his roots after returning to Billings, and spent more than a decade holding down the keys with local legend Jimmy Dressler and Big Country.

Sullivan has also played in many other groups.

When he isn't performing and practicing, Sullivan writes songs and arrangements. Many of his choir compositions are published and performed all over the country.

All four of Sullivan's upcoming shows are open to the public. Friday night’s show at the Elks Lodge is free for lodge members and just $5 for nonmembers. Music at the Heights VFW on Dec. 14 and 16, and Wild Ginger on Dec. 15 is free for everyone.
