Funk in the Trunk

Funk in the Trunk, pictured here in 2012, will play a reunion concert at the Garage Pub on Friday, June 15.

The Garage Pub at Yellowstone Valley Brewing Company is bringing funky back.

To the grooving delight of Billings fans, Funk in the Trunk will reunite on stage Friday night to cover funk and rock tracks by the likes of Earth, Wind & Fire; Chicago; James Brown and more.

“It’s a lot of the ‘70s horn band sound,” guitarist Alex Nauman said, which might be a bit of an understatement. With nine members joining in on guitar, sax, trumpet, trombone, vocals and percussion, the euphony becomes epic.

The band formed in Billings in 2008, and Nauman joined shortly after. The group toured the region regularly for a few years, until Gy Moody, leader of the brassy bunch, moved to Memphis in 2014, to pursue his career in geographic information systems. He’s now based in Denver, making it somewhat easier for him to return to Montana for gigs. Funk in the Trunk tries to reunite every year to rock its Billings roots.

“For however long I’ve been gone, I can honestly say I’m truly honored just to be in the same room with these guys,” Moody noted.

Joining Moody and Nauman on Friday are Dave Green, Robin Martinez, Matt Devitt, Tony Hammond, Mark Fenderson, Sam White and Paul Lechner.

The Garage Pub is located at 2123 First Ave. N. On Friday, doors open at 4 p.m. Fans of all ages can glory in the groove for $10 at the door.

After the show, Funk in the Trunk will carry on to Wolf Point to play Brewfest on Saturday.
