5:01 Weekend sampler
The lighting of the Community Christmas Tree, above, takes place immediately preceding the Holiday Parade today at 5:30 p.m.

Savor the live music scene this long holiday weekend. My top pick is roots rocker Dan Page and the Barn Cats on Saturday over at The Garage Pub at Yellowstone Valley Brewing Co., 2123-B First Ave. North. Pub hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Bones Brewing Pub and Eatery, 1425 Broadwater Ave., is hosting two free shows - Mile 7 Band is playing on Friday and Heard of Turtles? performs Saturday. The shows start at 8 p.m., and there is no cover. Jonathan Price is at the Den at West Park Plaza on Friday, and Crash Cult is at Bugz's Casino on Friday and Saturday.

Take in the Holiday Parade. I'm always cold. Except for the times I'm too hot. But mostly, I'm cold. Which is why, once the temperature dips below 60 degrees, you will see me outside only as I run to start my car so it will be warm when I leave.

I make one exception to my boycott of the outdoors, and that's for the annual Holiday Parade. I bundle up in my warmest clothes, grab a blanket for myself and my daughter and check out the floats just a couple of blocks from work. This year's parade is on the traditional day - today - the day after Thanksgiving, at 7 p.m. The parade travels west on Third Avenue North from North 26th Street, then east on Second Avenue North.

Join in the Community Christmas Tree relighting. Downtown Billings kicked off its holiday festivities early when the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree arrived on Nov. 11. Students sang Christmas carols under Skypoint as residents signed the banner on the truck carrying the Capitol Christmas tree on its way to Washington, D.C. Another famous tree will continue downtown's festive spirit. The public is invited to join in the Community Christmas Tree relighting ceremony before the Holiday Parade today at 5:30 p.m. at Community Park, located at First Avenue North and Division Street.
